Thoughts on 2011 Online Gambling Industry

Since the mid 1990’s, the online casino industry has been growing larger and more accommodating with each passing year. It’s a great sign for players, but also presents a small problem. How do you find the best real-money or free casino to play at?

You could skip around, joining one online casino to the next in hopes of getting lucky enough to find just the right one; but do keep in mind there are about 750 casino gaming sites on the internet. Or, you could take a few moments to research the best online casinos, narrowing your results at reputable casino review pages, and get it right the first time.

When comparing a deposit bonus with a no deposit bonus, the first thing you'll notice is the size difference. Deposit bonuses are phenomenally larger in value than no deposit bonuses. Then again, getting something for nothing holds an extreme amount of value in itself.

If we delve further into the terms of deposit bonus and no deposit bonus promotions, you'll find more drastic differences between the two. For instance, a deposit bonus will generally have much lower wagering requirements, such as 20x the deposit + bonus amount, whereas a no deposit bonus could call for as high as 100x wagering requirements.

B.C. Online Casino Re-launches

British Columbia looked like a pioneer when the government launched PlayNow.com, an online gambling site back in mid-July. The site, however, had to be shut down just hours after going live. On Thursday, the site was again back up and running.

The British Columbia Lottery Corp. made history when they launched PlayNow last month. The province became the first place in North America to offer regulated online casinos to their residents, and hundreds of players signed up in the first couple of hours.

A security breach caused the site to shut down, and it has taken over a month for the government to correct the security issues. A flaw in the software was determined to be the problem, and with the software fixed, the site again went live, much to the satisfaction of online gamblers.

"This is going to be great and I cannot wait to sign up,' said Warren Beldum. "I wish it could have happened sooner, but I am glad that they got all their issues straightened out and they no longer are putting all my information at risk. I can't wait to play."

That is a sentiment shared not only by B.C. residents, but many Canadians. Alberta, Ontario, and Saskatchewan residents may soon get to experience the same online games that B.C. residents are privileged to. All of those other provinces have either already committed to launching online gaming sites, or are in the process of examining the possibility.

Online Gambling coming to Ontario in 2012

The Crown Corporation will spend the next year and a half deciding on how to proceed with creating an online casino site. The OLG has had several scandals in the past couple of years, and skeptics are concerned about their ability to operate a gambling website.

British Columbia did all of their research and launched their online casino site earlier this year. Within hours, the site had to be shut down because of security breaches. Initially it had been reported that large amounts of traffic caused the site to become overloaded, but that was later refuted.

The OLG funds important aspects of life in Ontario including public employment, education, and hospital care. Officials are estimating that hundreds of millions of dollars would be pumped into these programs when the Internet gambling site is launched.

British Columbia made the move to online gambling when lawmakers realized that millions of dollars was being sent to offshore gambling sites by B.C. residents. Ontario officials estimate that $400 million currently goes to sites outside of the province.

Online gambling prohibition next?

In the past couple of years there have been two major issues that have divided lawmakers. The first is same sex marriage, and the second is online gambling. On Wednesday, a federal judge provided hope for same sex marriage.

Proposition 8 in California banned same sex marriage much to the chagrin of many of the liberal states' residents. Judge Vaughn R. Walker, however, overturned Proposition 8, claiming that the law was unconstitutional. It was a ruling that was praised all across the US.

Online gambling prohibition could be the next barrier to be broken down in the country. Lawmakers in Washington have already started to advance a bill that would create regulations within the online gambling industry in the US.

Representative Barney Frank passed the legislation through the House Financial Services Committee last week. The next step will be taking the issue to the full House, which may not happen until next year with the legislative session due for a recess shortly. After the break, the focus will shift to the mid-term elections in November.
